Having served as municipal office space since the 1950s, the McNichols Building's interior was gutted in 2010 so the raw space could house the first Denver Biennial of the Americas. The region-wide, month-long celebration of art, culture and ideas from North, South and Central America was headquartered in the McNichols Building, the first public use of the historic Carnegie Library since its days as Denver's first public library. Additional interior construction and exterior restoration is in the McNichols Building's future to create a permanent cultural center/event facility that will serve an activation engine and amenity for Civic Center.
